Magical Thinking …..The Suite of Hearts
March 22, 2008 by imkirkwoodI have become fascinated by playing cards, their use and symbolism. Decks of cards have been used for centuries to forecast and tell the future. People continue to put their belief in something outside of themselves to control their destiny.
I am working on a series of drawings I call Magical Thinking. I am creating my own deck of cards. The prints are 13 x 19 inches and some of my cards are 7.5 x 18 inches.
I filled the cards with symbols both ancient and modern that when shuffled will show the shuffler what they need to control their future, their lives or their desires if they have Magical Thinking.
The card, pictured below, The Five of Hearts…gave me the most trouble with its’ creation. The young girls would not cooperate with the scenerio I had created. They would not “look ” in the right direction. Their arraignment is not exactly what I wanted for them. The orange of their sweatshirts would not be the orange I wanted, no matter how orange a color I chose. The meaning of the card based on its’ number(5) and it’s deep red color: is high energy, emotions and at the negative end-labile.
